Enabling Scripts and Plug-Ins

For a guide to re-enabling plug-ins select your browser from this list

Background

Java Scripts are used by many web pages to produce an 'action'. This can be as simple but important as displaying a menu!

Many Web pages will not work well with JavaScript disabled so most Browsers allow JavaScript by default. Plug ins are similar e.g. Adobe Flash is a plug in (see this page for information on the Silverlight plug-in)

We try and keep scripts to a minimum but some are required to help setup the Silverlight Plug-in.

Disabled Scripts & Plugins

Modern Browsers allow users to turn Java Scripts off - but this prevents these actions taking place. So it is unusual to have scripting turned off.

Most browsers display an icon or message to indicate you have blocked scripts or plug-ins for the page you are viewing.

Re-Enabling

The following describes how to turn scripts and plug ins back on. The process depends on your Browser.

Internet Explorer (IE7 & IE8)

Java Script

Tools->Internet Options->Security tab.
Select Internet Zone, click Custom Level button.
In the dialog that appears scroll down to Scripting and select Enable under Active Scripting

Plug-ins

Tools menu->Manage Add-ons->Enable or Disable->Select Silverlight from the List - the option to Enable/ Disable is towards the bottom of the dialog box. Click OK then OK again.

Firefox version 3.5 or later

Java Script

Tools menu->Options->Content (tab) - check box for Java Script.

Plug-ins

Tools menu->Add-ons. Select the Silverlight plug-in from the list - an option to enable appears (or shows disable if currently enabled!).

Opera 10

Tools menu->Quick Preferences - shows a menu with a Java Script option and a separate (all) Plug In option.Version 10.5 hides the tools menu with the large O in the top left corner

Alternatively

Tools Menu->Preferences select Advanced (tab) select Content from left hand list - there is check box for Java Script and one for (all) Plug ins.

Google Chrome ver 4.1

Spanner Menu->Options, Under the Bonnet tab, from Privacy section click Content settings... button. Select JavaScript tab - chose "Allow all sites to run JavaScript(recommended)". The same dialog also has a Plug-ins tab - chose "Allow all sites to run Plug-ins (recommended)"

Alternatively:- an icon appears in the navigation pane indicating that scripts or plug-ins where blocked. Right click on that will offer similar choices.

NB Chrome seems to only use settings for Internet sites not local files.

Apple Safari 4.0

Cog wheel icon (top right) -> Preferences select Security (tab) - check box for Java Script and separate one for plug-ins.

Other Versions

Earlier Browser versions than those shown above may not support disabling JavaScript (e.g Chrome 4.0). Later versions will presumably have a similar behaviour to those indicated above.

Other Browsers

The principle is similar in most browsers so look for a tools or options menu and work through the possibilities!

Next Step

After turning on Java Script and enabling Plug ins

Use the Browser back button and refresh the page. In some cases you may need to restart the Browser/Presentation.

Security Software (Anti-Virus software)

It is possible for Security Software to block scripts. Usually these attempt to only prevent scripts that do something 'unusual'. Please refer to the Security Software's documentation to adjust its settings.
